The rebuild of Highland High School reimagines one of Salt Lake City's most beloved schools on the campus it has occupied in Sugar House since 1956. NWL Architects was engaged in 2022 to study the feasibility of a replacement comprehensive high school on the existing site, guided by two goals set by Salt Lake City School District: provide a state-of-the-art school that supports the very best education for students, and honor the traditions Highland has built over nearly seven decades. Following voter approval of the district's 2024 bond, that vision is now rising from the ground.
Our strategic master plan answered the challenge of a tight, occupied site with a multi-phase, five-year construction sequence that relocates the main building to the north end of campus — allowing students to remain in their school throughout construction while accommodating the entire new program on the existing campus. Shaped by community open houses and close collaboration with school and district leadership, the design features three levels of flexible, light-filled learning space, adaptable gymnasium and theater seating, and sustainable systems including on-site solar and ground-source heat pumps. Construction broke ground in April 2026, with completion anticipated in 2030 — when a new generation of Highland Rams will charge into a building worthy of their legacy.
